Fordite, also known as Detroit agate or Motor City agate, was formed from the buildup of hundreds of layers of enamel paint drippings on tracks and floors from the American car manufacturer assembly lines. A now fully-automated process with very little waste, cars were originally spray-painted by hand. The buildup would be baked numerous times and is hard enough to be cut and polished. Workers who recognized this potential value chipped off these waste products and saved them to be turned into jewelry later. When these chunks are ground down and polished, they reveal a dazzling array of colors.
Older Fordite specimens contain colors that are no longer popular today, like pastel yellow and sea-foam green.
It is extremely rare and expensive to find pieces sufficient in size and shape to make a knife handle from.
